FitMeals: Meal Planning Made Simple

PROBLEM

People often feel stuck at mealtime—the fridge is full, but deciding what to cook feels overwhelming and frustrating.

I realized this was a problem because...

Decision fatigue and lack of planning lead to skipped meals, poor food choices, or waste. People want to eat well but don’t have the time or energy to research recipes or track nutrition daily.

This problem is near and dear to me

In my personal life, fitness is a top priority. Additionally, health and wellness are areas I’ve personally seen people struggle with. I wanted to create a solution that makes eating healthy feel less like a chore and more like a natural part of daily life.

Conversations with potential users

I conducted interviews to understand how people approach cooking at home. A clear pattern emerged: users felt unmotivated to exercise and overwhelmed by the effort of finding healthy meals. They wanted quick, personalized solutions that fit into their routines.

Figuring out what is already in the market

I conducted interviews to understand how people approach cooking at home. A clear pattern emerged: users felt unmotivated to exercise and overwhelmed by the effort of finding healthy meals. They wanted quick, personalized solutions that fit into their routines.

SWOT Analysis, in summary

I did the SWOT analysis but to make it easier to digest the information, I’ve laid out the three key findings:

User personas

Through affinity mapping, I distilled insights into user personas. They wanted meal ideas that felt achievable, easy to follow, and adaptable to their goals. Frustrations included cluttered interfaces, lack of control, and too many disconnected apps. Introducing...Gowri Roberts! Gowri is a busy woman and is passionate about health and wellness. Her goals include feeling a clear headspace to perform optimally at the workplace, appreciates small and visible progress, as well a manageable workout regimen/meal plan.

Defining the user and visualizing user needs

I created a sitemap to visualize the experience. It mapped how each feature connected—from pantry input to recipe results—ensuring the app felt intuitive, efficient, and aligned with how users naturally move through tasks. This way, users will prioritize making time to focus on exercise and a healthy diet.

Low-fidelity wireframes, the start of the app design

I started with sketches to test layouts and interactions quickly. These wireframes focused on usability, helping me refine the flow of finding recipes, saving meals, and tracking progress before adding visuals.

Branding

Due to this being a full-blown app, I moved on to developing the branding. I crafted a brand identity that was clean, approachable, and energizing. The style tile defined typography, color palette, and components; the UI kit ensured consistency across screens.

Can’t forget the logo!

The hardest, but probably my favorite part of the design process, was designing the logo. The logo was designed to feel modern, health-focused, and instantly recognizable.

From low to high

I translated the low-fi sketches into polished designs. I introduced icons, imagery, and clear hierarchy to make inputs easier and recipes more engaging. User feedback on these mockups helped refine onboarding, navigation, and clarity of features.

See how it works, live!

I built an interactive prototype to test key tasks, like generating meal ideas based on pantry items. Usability tests confirmed that users understood the flow and found the experience enjoyable, with most saying they’d recommend FitMeals to others.

Strength

Many apps had sleek interfaces and large recipe libraries.

Weakness

Few apps offered true personalization or pantry-based planning.

Opportunity

By focusing on integration with what users already have, FitMeals could stand out as more practical and sustainable.
